Job Description:
Technical Co-Founder/CTO
AI Healthcare Payments Startup
New York, NY | In-Person
We are representing a funded, early-stage healthcare technology company seeking an exceptional CTO / Technical Co-Founder to build and lead an AI-powered platform focused on healthcare payments, claims, and revenue-cycle workflows.
This is a true builder role.
The company is not looking for an advisory CTO, fractional CTO, or executive who has moved away from hands-on engineering. The ideal candidate is a technically exceptional product builder who can personally architect and build the initial platform, make critical technology decisions, recruit the first engineering team, and help turn a validated business thesis into a scalable commercial company.
What the Company Is Building
The company is developing an AI-enabled healthcare payments platform designed to improve complex financial and administrative workflows across the healthcare ecosystem.
The product will combine AI, workflow automation, data infrastructure, secure integrations, and intelligent decisioning to reduce manual work, improve accuracy, accelerate financial processes, and provide greater visibility across healthcare payment operations.
Potential areas of the platform include:
- Claims and payment workflow automation
- Provider-payer financial operations
- Revenue cycle and reimbursement workflows
- Denials management and payment exceptions
- Payment reconciliation
- Healthcare data ingestion and normalization
- Secure integrations with billing, claims, payment, and healthcare systems
- AI-assisted workflow routing and decisioning
- Operational intelligence and automation
The Profile We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who is still very close to the technology.
You may currently be a CTO, VP of Engineering, Head of Engineering, founding engineer, senior architect, technical founder, or exceptional senior/principal engineer who has already demonstrated the ability to build products and lead technical execution.
This role is particularly well suited to someone who has worked in an elite engineering environment, high-growth startup, or technically demanding organization and now wants the opportunity to build a company from the ground up.
We are less interested in title or organizational size than in what you have personally built, architected, launched, and owned.
You should have demonstrated experience with:
- Building and launching a software product from concept or MVP through production
- Personally contributing to architecture and core technical development
- Designing secure, scalable production systems
- Building AI-powered products, intelligent workflow systems, automation platforms, or data-intensive applications
- Making early-stage technology and architecture decisions with limited infrastructure or support
- Recruiting, hiring, and leading engineers
- Owning a technology roadmap and engineering execution
- Working successfully in ambiguous, fast-moving environments
- Communicating effectively with founders, investors, customers, advisors, and executive stakeholders
Technical Background
Strong candidates will have experience across several of the following areas:
- AI/ML-enabled applications
- Generative AI or intelligent automation
- Workflow orchestration
- Data platforms and pipelines
- Cloud infrastructure
- APIs and enterprise integrations
- Secure SaaS architecture
- Transaction-processing systems
- Scalable B2B software
- Data ingestion and normalization
- Production AI/model deployment
- Platform architecture
You should be comfortable making architectural decisions while also being capable of opening the codebase and building alongside the team.
Industry Experience
Direct healthcare payments experience is highly desirable, particularly experience involving:
- Healthcare claims
- Revenue cycle management
- Reimbursement
- Denials
- Provider-payer workflows
- Payment reconciliation
- Billing technology
- Healthcare interoperability
- Healthcare financial operations
However, healthcare experience is not an absolute requirement.
Exceptional candidates may instead come from environments involving complex, regulated, data-heavy, workflow-heavy, or transaction-oriented systems.
Relevant backgrounds may include:
- Healthcare technology
- Revenue cycle management
- Claims technology
- Payments
- Fintech
- AI workflow automation
- B2B SaaS
- Enterprise software
- Data infrastructure
- Healthcare interoperability
- Billing platforms
- Financial infrastructure
- Transaction-processing platforms
Candidates coming from fintech, payments, or another regulated environment should be able to demonstrate experience solving problems involving transactions, reconciliation, complex workflows, integrations, or secure data.
Experience Matters
One of the most important qualifications for this role is evidence that you have actually built something from the beginning.
They are particularly interested in candidates who can point to a product where they:
- Started with a concept, customer problem, or early technical thesis
- Designed the initial architecture
- Personally contributed to development
- Shipped an MVP
- Took the product into production
- Learned from customers and improved the product
- Helped scale the technology as adoption increased
- Built or helped build the engineering organization around it
Candidates whose experience has primarily involved managing large established engineering organizations without significant hands-on product-building experience are unlikely to be the right fit.
Academic & Technical Foundation
A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline is strongly preferred.
The company places meaningful value on exceptional academic and technical pedigree, particularly candidates who have trained in highly selective, globally recognized engineering or computer science environments.
Examples may include institutions such as MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley, Caltech, Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, UIUC, Georgia Tech, University of Washington, Michigan, UT Austin and similarly rigorous U.S. or international technical programs.
What You'll Do
As CTO / Technical Co-Founder, you will own technology and engineering from the ground up.
You will:
- Define the company's technology vision
- Own product architecture and engineering strategy
- Build and launch the initial product
- Personally contribute to early product development
- Select the initial technology stack
- Design secure and scalable infrastructure
- Embed AI and intelligent automation throughout the product
- Develop systems for complex healthcare financial workflows
- Lead integrations with healthcare, claims, billing, payment, and data platforms
- Establish engineering standards and development processes
- Recruit the first engineers
- Build and lead the early engineering organization
- Own the technology roadmap from MVP through commercial scale
- Work closely with the CEO on company and product strategy
- Engage directly with early customers and design partners
- Work with investors, advisors, and commercial partners
- Help shape the company beyond engineering as a true co-founder
